Braithwaite to Lorton linear walk via Crag Hill

A 15km linear walk courtesy of the Honister Rambler at the limit, still, of T’s stamina.

Route: taking a delayed 9:44am 77A bus over Whinlatter to Braithwaite and having a preliminary coffee at Jaspers. Then walking up through the village to the road and then track towards Barrow but keeping to the lower route to Barrow Door. Continuing under Causey Pike and rising to the pass, east of Sail. Ascending the rather gruelling zigzags to Sail’s summit before a small descent and ascent of Crag Hill. Spurning Eel Crag and its more difficult descent in favour of the gentle descent to an obvious path crossroads and turning right for Coledale Hause. Ascending 170m to the summit of Hopegill Head and bumping by chance into Mark Frost (owner of No3). Continuing to the summit of Whiteside and after a swig of wine, descending towards Dodd but turning right at the saddle just before it to follow minor paths to the new foot bridge and home via the familiar track to Scales.

Conditions: a hot sunny day though cooler at altitude and an occasional cooling breeze.

Pub? No but a double espresso at Jaspers on getting off the bus and a small can of Malbec just down from Whiteside looking north.
